The Rewards of Multigenerational Living
Turns out, family togetherness can continue well after an annual holiday gathering.
With today's competitive housing costs and a growing desire for connection, it's easy to see why multigenerational living is gaining momentum. Think grandparents, parents and children benefiting in multiple ways while sharing one roof.
The Why
Pooling resources can make a serious dent in monthly bills. Dividing up the cost of a mortgage, utilities and groceries is a win-win for young adults getting on their feet as well as retirees on a fixed income. Beyond the financial boost, there's something even more valuable for everyone — time together. Grandparents help with childcare. Adult kids support aging parents. Young children learn the value of family. It's a full-circle lifestyle with built-in support.
The How
Space and privacy are essential. That's why many families are rethinking home design with features like separate entrances, private suites and even second kitchens. Accessibility upgrades such as walk-in, no-threshold showers and wider interior doorways are also important, as they help older family members feel safe and independent. If yard space allows, a secondary housing unit can be added for a little extra breathing room.
The Real
Multigenerational living isn't always picture-perfect. Different routines and a crowded kitchen now and then are all part of the package. Nevertheless, with clear expectations, open communication and the occasional family meeting, those challenges become growth opportunities. Beyond simply sharing space, this lifestyle brings shared memories, stronger bonds and some financial benefits. It may be an old-school concept, but it's proving to be a smart and sensible choice for many families.
"Family is not an important thing. It's everything." — Michael J. Fox

Free-Standing Bathtub
A large soaker tub can help you relax and unwind after a demanding day. Free-standing tubs can also serve as a decorative focal point.
Open Shower
En suite bathrooms often have space for an open shower, creating a spa-like feel.
Separate Sinks
A contemporary countertop with double sinks provides elegant durability as well as more space for two people to get ready in the morning.
Seating Area
Include a comfortable chair or stool to sit on while you get dressed and put on shoes.
Stand-Out Lighting
From high-tech to classic design options, bathroom chandeliers and stylish vanity lighting enhance the decor.

Composting: Good for the Planet, Great for the Garden
Instead of tossing yard and food waste into the trash, consider composting it to create nutrient-rich fertilizer for flowers, shrubs and trees. Start by identifying a site in the yard for composting, then decide how hands-on you want to be.
Vermicomposting lets worms do the work, active composting requires you to turn the pile every few days, and passive composting lets it slowly break down on its own. You can compost in a simple pile, but using a bin, compost tumbler or electric composter can help speed up the process.
Next, start collecting brown and green waste and store in separate containers or piles. Carbon-rich brown waste includes items like branches and cardboard, while nitrogen-rich green waste can be things like food scraps and grass clippings. Once you've collected enough waste, start layering by alternating 3–4 inches of brown material and 2–3 inches of green. Thoroughly saturate with water.
If you're hot composting, you'll find it breaks down waste quickly and kills many pathogens. It takes some effort, so be prepared for regular turning and monitoring. However, it's a fast, effective way to create rich compost.

Say No to Spores
Mold has a sneaky way of showing up when you least expect it. But with a few smart habits, you can show mold the door before it settles in. Follow these easy tips to help keep mold from taking hold.
- Use fans to help circulate air throughout the house.
- Keep your bathroom door ajar or crack a window while showering to allow excess humidity to escape.
- If you find a water leak, repair it as quickly as possible.
- Invest in an air purifier or buy some air-purifying plants to help improve air quality.
- Use a moisture meter to track the humidity level in your home. The EPA recommends maintaining indoor humidity levels from 30–60%.
